The Murphy Centre is committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and receives funding from the corporate and private sector, as well as the Federal and Provincial governments. This ensures that all resources provided by the Murphy Centre are free of charge, making education and career opportunities accessible to all.

SERVICES OFFERED

The Murphy Centre stands out as the only organization in the province that offers four academic service streams:

  1. High School Credit Program
  2. Adult Basic Education Program
  3. General Educational Development (GED)
  4. Literacy Instruction

In addition to these academic services, the Murphy Centre also provides Career Services and Technology Services (TECHPREP). The centre takes pride in its Academic Readiness Program, which prepares individuals for further education or employment.

ACADEMIC SERVICES

High School Credit Program & Adult Basic Education Program

The High School Credit Program caters to early school leavers aged 18 and older who require a supportive learning environment. The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program is designed for adults aged 19 and older, combining self-directed learning with instructor-facilitated sessions. Graduates of the ABE program earn a high school equivalency diploma. The Murphy Centre’s academic staff understands the complex learning needs of participants and strives to motivate and involve them in their educational journey.

Acceptance into the GED prep program is determined through an assessment process that evaluates the learner’s academic history and readiness to learn.

In addition to in-class preparation services, the Murphy Centre now offers a virtual preparation program called GED Academy. This online program allows learners to study at their own pace while being monitored by the GED coordinator.

Literacy Programming – Bridging the Gap with Access Learning

The Murphy Centre provides adult literacy programming in various locations across Newfoundland and Labrador. In-person programs are available in St. John’s, Gander, Corner Brook, and Happy Valley-Goose Bay, while online literacy programming is offered to adults in rural areas. TechPrep is a program designed to empower marginalized individuals and provide them with an introduction to the local tech industry. The program begins with an intensive one-week, in-person training session, followed by nine weeks of self-paced learning through a partnership with IBM SkillsBuild. Participants explore various tech disciplines, including web development, HTML & CSS, JavaScript, Python, SQL, data science, cyber security, and cloud computing. TechPrep not only expands horizons but also opens doors to exciting career opportunities in the tech sector. While not a replacement for post-secondary education, TechPrep serves as a valuable stepping-stone for individuals interested in exploring tech careers.

ACADEMIC READINESS PROGRAM – RESTART YOUR EDUCATION JOURNEY

The Readiness Program at the Murphy Centre helps individuals prepare for regular full-time Adult Basic Education (ABE) or High School Credit courses. The program is divided into two sections: one for individuals looking to enroll in ABE or High School Credit courses and the other for graduates seeking to upgrade or fulfill prerequisites for post-secondary programs. The Readiness Program is funded exclusively through raised revenue, highlighting its importance and the need for public support.

The first program, Readiness and Bridging, supports individuals who are not ready for entry into regular ABE or High School Credit streams due to various challenges.
