Sustainable Development Goals and Hailey’s Wastewater Treatment Plant

Introduction

A series of glitches and a broken pipe caused Hailey’s wastewater treatment plant to release an excessive amount of phosphorous into the Big Wood River during the summer and fall. This incident raises concerns regarding the city’s compliance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations.

Noncompliance with Federal Pollutant Discharge Criteria

The city of Hailey recently received a noncompliance letter from the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality on October 16. The letter notified the city that phosphorus levels in its wastewater effluent violated federal pollutant discharge criteria in June, August, and September. Public Works Director Brian Yeager made this announcement during a City Council meeting held on Monday evening.

Wastewater Treatment Process

Hailey’s treated wastewater is piped from its South Woodside treatment plant to the Eccles Flying Hat Ranch property line. From there, it is discharged into the Big Wood River at a point between Colorado Gulch and the Broadford Road bridge. This process is crucial for maintaining the health and sustainability of the river ecosystem.
