Vehicles are a complex structure, made up of different components, parts, and materials. The concept of circularity presents immense potential to transform this composition and ensure more efficient use of resources. A key approach to achieving this is the utilization of a limited number of mono-materials that can be effectively recycled. To facilitate this process, it is crucial to enhance the disassembly of vehicles, making the mono-materials easily accessible at the end of a vehicle’s life. The NEUE KLASSE, starting from 2025, will introduce improvements in this regard.
Increased Use of Secondary Materials
Another central approach to promoting circularity is the increased use of secondary materials. This strategy not only reduces our reliance on valuable and limited resources but also requires less energy for production compared to primary raw materials. Gradually increasing the content of secondary raw materials is therefore a key measure in reducing CO2 emissions within the supply chain. However, the availability of high-quality secondary materials is essential for the success of this approach. In light of this, we are actively planning to utilize our end-of-life vehicles as a source of high-quality secondary raw materials. The groundwork for this initiative is being laid through the Car2Car project, which is a joint state-funded collaboration involving the recycling industry, commodity processors, and academia.
Innovative Solutions for Challenging Raw Materials
While certain raw materials, such as aluminum, can already be easily recycled and are available in sufficient quantities as high-quality secondary materials, others pose more significant challenges. For instance, components like high-voltage batteries have complex compositions and contain valuable raw materials that are difficult to recycle. To address this issue, we are collaborating with innovative partners from both the business and academic sectors to develop solutions for the recovery and reuse of these raw materials.
