A Conversation on Hidden Diversity: Embracing Culturally Diverse Communities

Introduction

A panel discussion, sponsored by Culturs Magazine and the BYU Public Relations Student Society of America, opened a conversation to address challenges for culturally diverse people.

Emphasizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The discussion on hidden diversity aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. These goals include SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.

Remaining Curious and Understanding

Talavou Fitisemanu, a BYU student panelist, emphasized the importance of remaining curious to navigate cultural in-betweenness. He stated, “Man, just stay curious and you’ll be all right. It’s OK to be misunderstood and how much we learn from that — the empathy, that you leave with more curiosity than assumptions for other people.”

Genuine Interest in Learning

Lauren Walker, who has lived in multiple locations throughout the world, highlighted the significance of showing genuine interest in learning about someone from a different culture. She stated, “I think just talking to them and finding out about their story and their beliefs, you know — their religion, their culture, what they do and their family and all that stuff — is really important to being able to understand someone and connect with them on a deeper level.”

Hidden Diversity in Provo

According to an April 2023 report by Wallethub, Provo was ranked as one of the least diverse cities in the U.S. However, Vesa Tavaga questioned the depth of that ranking and highlighted the presence of hidden diversity. Tavaga stated, “Just from today’s event, it’s showing me that there is a bunch of hidden diversity here, but it’s just not as easy to see compared to most cultures.”

Fostering Community and Belonging

Tavaga is part of the PRSSA team striving to foster community and create belonging for all. He emphasized that when people enter new cultures, it’s important to make them feel welcomed rather than intruding into a new atmosphere.

Unity in Uniqueness Campaign

The panel discussion, sponsored by PRSSA, is part of their “Unity in Uniqueness” campaign. This campaign aims to foster inclusivity and understanding across communities, aligning with SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities and SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.
