High school senior Marie Willson discovered her passion for construction while renovating a house with her father in Price. Inspired by the experience, she eagerly enrolled in Canyons Technical Education Center’s construction management class. Alongside her classmates, Willson dedicated 10 to 12 hours per week to construct a 1,900-square-foot house located at 142 Cottage Ave. in Sandy.
Opening Ceremony
On Wednesday, the class, led by teacher Nathan Hampton, celebrated the completion of their hard work. They were joined by administrators and city officials for a ribbon-cutting ceremony, officially opening the three-bedroom, two-bath affordable home to the public. The house, situated on a lot donated by the city to the student center, is listed for sale at an affordable price of $468,000. It features a second-story loft, an unfinished basement, and custom closets.
Affordable Housing for Public Servants
The target market for this affordable home includes teachers, police officers, firefighters, and veterans. However, anyone who meets the income eligibility requirements can make an offer. Canyons School District spokeswoman Kirsten Stewart emphasized that selling affordable homes to public servants allows students to give back to the community. Contributions and Future Prospects
The construction of this home spanned three school years, with some delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and supply-chain issues. A total of 88 students, under the guidance of teacher Nathan Hampton, contributed to the project. While only around 10% of the students expressed interest in pursuing a career in construction, some plan to pursue construction management degrees or work for subcontractors. Notably, one student even started his own carpentry business immediately after completing the course.
