Fulda Teacher Builds Family Unit with Students
In her 13 years as an Adult Basic Education teacher, Sherri Boehnke has not only built up a network of resources to call upon, but she’s also built a family unit with her students.
“We’ve really become like a family. I’ve been invited to weddings, birthday parties and even some funerals,” Boehnke said. “We also invite them over.”
I’ve enjoyed seeing the progress the students make, from not being able to answer a telephone call to making conversation.
Sherri Boehnke
Boehnke taught first grade in Fulda for 36 years before retiring for the first time. She then was asked to teach Adult Basic Education classes through ISD 518, and started in 2011.
She officially retired from all things career-focused on May 29.
“It’s very humbling to hear the students’ stories, where they came from and what they’ve dealt with,” said Boehnke. “(I’ve enjoyed) seeing the students blossom and be accepted into Fulda.”
In her 13 years at ISD 518, Boehnke was bounced around from location to location in the Fulda area, first starting at the middle school, then the high school, then where she ended her career, St. Gabriel’s Catholic School.
I’ve enjoyed seeing the progress the students make, from not being able to answer a telephone call to making conversation.
She has had anywhere from two to 17 students in her class at any given time. One of those students has continually taken classes with Boehnke since 2012.
Other than spending time with family, Boehnke has no big retirement plans and is ready to take it easy. She is thankful for her time as an educator and said she’s gained some valuable lessons over the years.
“I’ve learned empathy and understanding from teaching my students. (I’ve also learned) to be accepting of other cultures,” she shared.
