Lithium South Development Corporation Advances Environmental Impact Assessment for Hombre Muerto North Lithium Project
Introduction
On June 25, 2025, Lithium South Development Corporation (“Lithium South” or the “Company”) announced receipt of a response from the Mining Secretariat of Salta Province, Argentina, regarding the Environmental Impact Assessment (E.I.A.) submitted in September 2024 for the Hombre Muerto North Lithium Project (HMN Li Project). The Company is finalizing its response to obtain the necessary approval to proceed.
Environmental Impact Assessment and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The E.I.A. is a critical step toward the development of the HMN Li Project, enabling the construction of a Pilot Plant for the upcoming Definitive Feasibility Study. The assessment and subsequent activities emphasize Lithium South’s commitment to multiple Sustainable Development Goals, including:
- SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation – Through hydro-geological verification and continuous monitoring of groundwater levels.
- SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – By advancing lithium extraction technologies and infrastructure development.
- SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – Via rigorous environmental impact evaluation and mitigation planning.
- SDG 13: Climate Action – Supporting sustainable lithium production essential for clean energy technologies.
- SDG 15: Life on Land – Protecting soil integrity, surface stability, erosion control, and ecosystem safeguards.
- SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – Engaging local communities and stakeholders through transparent communication.
Key Components of the Response to the Mining Secretariat
- Targeted Field Campaign: Conducting Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) to confirm camp site stability and provide data for foundation design.
- Hydro-geological Verification: Collecting fresh groundwater-level readings across the piezometer network with new monthly monitoring protocols to ensure continuous oversight of the salar’s water balance.
- Data Integration and Rapid Reporting: Feeding field results into an expanded hydro-geological model, updating impact matrices, and enhancing mitigation plans addressing environmental safeguards.
- Community Transparency: Sharing summary findings with local stakeholders to reinforce open dialogue and socio-environmental responsibility.
- Formal Submission: Delivering a comprehensive technical dossier within ten business days, including quality assurance/quality control logs, trend analyses, and a proactive engagement schedule for ongoing compliance reviews.
Future Plans and ESG Framework
Lithium South plans to release a concise work plan for its Feasibility Study, which will outline:
- Optimized project flowsheet
- Updated resource model
- Expanded Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework
This approach aims to fast-track value creation for shareholders and support sustainable development in the Province of Salta, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Project Overview and Regional Context
Lithium South owns 100% of the HMN Li Project, located in Salta and Catamarca Provinces within Argentina’s lithium triangle. The project area is adjacent to established lithium operations, including Rio Tinto Lithium to the south and a U.S. billion-dollar lithium development by POSCO to the east.
Exploration has delineated a NI 43-101 compliant resource of 1,583,200 tonnes Lithium Carbonate Equivalent (LCE) at an average grade of 736 mg/L lithium, with 1,463,000 tonnes measured and 120,000 tonnes indicated at a cutoff grade of 500 mg/L lithium.
A Preliminary Economic Assessment completed in April 2024 indicates potential for a 15,600 tonne per year lithium carbonate project, with the Company now advancing toward a Feasibility Study.
Commitment to Environmental Stewardship and Sustainable Development
Fernando Villarroel, Chief Operating Officer and Director, stated: “Every request from the Mining Secretariat is an opportunity to demonstrate the rigor of our environmental stewardship and the professionalism of our team. We are proud to deliver best-in-class technical responses on an accelerated schedule as we advance the 100% owned Hombre Muerto North Lithium Project.”
