South Tahoe Public Utility District Expands Water Efficiency Programs

Introduction

The South Tahoe Public Utility District (District) is enhancing its commitment to sustainable water management by launching two new incentive programs aimed at promoting efficient water use among residential and commercial customers. These initiatives align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

New Incentive Programs

Starting July 1, 2025, customers will benefit from instant savings on the purchase of water-efficient devices without the need for rebate applications. The programs focus on:

  1. MOEN Automatic Home Water Shut-Off Devices
    • Smart leak detection systems that automatically shut off water to prevent damage and reduce waste.
    • Designed for homeowners seeking to protect their property while conserving water resources.
  2. CNSRV Defrosting System for Commercial Kitchens
    • Enables food service businesses to defrost frozen food safely without wasting water.
    • Supports commercial water efficiency and reduces overall water consumption.

Program Adjustments and Ongoing Rebates

To accommodate these new incentives, rebates for high-efficiency toilets and clothes washers will be discontinued after June 30, 2025. Customers are encouraged to submit rebate applications before this deadline to benefit from these programs.

The District will continue offering rebates for:

  • Leak repairs
  • Turf removal
  • Smart irrigation controllers

Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals

  • SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation – These programs promote sustainable water management and ensure availability and sustainable management of water resources.
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – By encouraging water-efficient technologies, the District supports resilient infrastructure and sustainable urban development.
  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – The incentive programs foster responsible water consumption practices among residents and businesses.

Contact and Additional Information

For more details on water efficiency rebates and how to apply, customers can visit the District’s website at stpud.us or contact Customer Service at 530-544-6474.

  2. SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – The incentive programs encourage efficient use of water resources, promoting sustainable consumption patterns.
  3. SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – By supporting water-saving technologies for both residential and commercial users, the article contributes to making communities more sustainable.

2. Specific Targets Under Those SDGs

  1. SDG 6 Targets:
    • 6.4: By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity.
    • 6.3: Improve water quality by reducing pollution and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals.
  2. SDG 12 Targets:
    • 12.2: Achieve sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources.
    • 12.5: Substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse.
  3. SDG 11 Targets:
    • 11.6: Reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management.

3. Indicators Mentioned or Implied to Measure Progress

  1. Water Efficiency Indicators:
    • Number of customers adopting water-efficient devices such as MOEN Automatic Home Water Shut-Off Devices and CNSRV Defrosting Systems.
    • Reduction in water usage or water waste measured through leak detection and automatic shut-off systems.
    • Volume of water saved through rebate and incentive programs for leak repairs, turf removal, and smart irrigation controllers.
  2. Program Uptake Indicators:
    • Number of incentive program participants before and after July 1, 2025.
    • Discontinuation and uptake rates of rebates for high-efficiency toilets and clothes washers.
