EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) —
A lottery is now open for eligible applicants to apply for the newly constructed townhouse-style homes in East Providence. The development, located at the corner of Taunton Avenue and Ivy Street, is set to be completed in a few months.
Revitalizing a Vacant Parcel
“It’s a wonderful place, and it’s just going to bring some vibrancy to a parcel that was vacant for decades,” stated Mayor Bob DaSilva, emphasizing the positive impact this new housing development will have on the community.
Diverse Housing Options
The development consists of 13 units, offering a variety of housing options. There are four two-bedroom live-work homes with first-floor commercial space, conveniently located across from City Hall. Additionally, there are nine three-bedroom townhouse-style homes.
Affordability for All
Recognizing the challenges faced by the local housing market, Bill Lewis, co-director of real estate development at NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley, explained, “The market is kind of difficult, so even the working force can’t afford these homes if they were market homes.”
The affordable housing units are specifically designed for first-time home buyers who earn up to 60%, 80%, or 100% of the area’s median income. For a family of four, this translates to approximately $67,000, $90,000, and $112,000 respectively.
Meg Rego, also from NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley, highlighted that the purchase price of the homes varies based on the buyer’s income level.
Affordability for 30 Years
The properties in this development are deed-restricted for 30 years, ensuring that they remain affordable for three decades. This long-term commitment to affordability aims to provide stability and security for homeowners.
Application Process and Timeline
